Ekopanely boards are designed for the installation of self-supporting partition walls, ceilings and for cladding all types of wooden buildings (low-energy homes). They can be used wherever you need to build something quickly and easily using from high-quality natural material. They can also be used with floors or as rafter insulation.

Surface finish

Ekopanely boards have no restrictions with surface finishes. Unlike plasterboard and OSB boards, they allow you to apply standard surface finishes such as painting, tiling, wallpapering, plastering, the application of thin-layer and clay plasters, wood cladding, and many more. Lime stucco can also be used indoors. Modern silicate or silicone plasters are suitable for facades, as they are permeable yet moisture-tight, leaving your wooden building unaffected.

However, close attention must be paid to surface finishes. You should start by selecting suitable preparations. If you choose something other than that recommended by the manufacturer, carefully read the available information about the preparation or, ideally, contact the manufacturer’s expert consultant directly. He should be able to choose suitable equivalents to the surface finish systems we recommend. We can offer surface finishes material with the Ekopanely boards we supply for your prefabricated house, which will save you the trouble of choosing and transporting all the materials.

Partition walls

Partition walls are one of the most common uses for Ekopanely boards when reconstructing a house. Due to the high mechanical resistance and the strength of the straw panel, there is no need to build a supporting structure for the partition wall meaning you save up to 15% on the costs of the material. Ekopanely boards can be ordered trimmed to the required length so there is little excess residue when cutting and trimming. Together with a very simple system for fastening and joining Ekopanely boards, we guarantee that it is easy and especially very fast to build a partition wall.

We recommend making a double partition wall which increases acoustic absorption and with this application it is easier to route electrical wiring, HVAC distribution systems and installation of door frames. Electrical wiring in Ekopanely boards does not require increased safety, standard electrical cables are used. The sound insulation of a double partition wall with no surface finish is 45dB which is equivalent to a 50cm-wide wall made from Ytong Theta porous concrete. Partition walls made from Ekopanely boards are built using the dry method which makes it easy (DIY possibility) and quick unlike brick partition walls.

Slanted attic, roof extensions and loft conversions

Another popular way of using Ekopanely boards is in lofts and in slanted attics of new buildings. If the bindings and joist construction are at an axial distance of 800mm and in a plane, Ekopanely boards can be fitted directly onto them. If not, the required base can be quickly prepared by placing and attaching a leveling grid on the beams. When making a ceiling using Ekopanely boards we recommend using panels 800mm wide and smaller lengths, to make them easier to handle.

Heat accumulation is a fundamental characteristic which makes Ekopanely boards suitable for using in loft spaces. In the summer the room retains the coolness from the night until the evening. In the winter, however, the room accumulates heat during the day, and that heat remains until morning. This mechanism keeps the temperature stable in your attic with no major fluctuations. OSB boards and plasterboard do not have this accumulation ability.

The insulation properties of Ekopanely boards help to fully span thermal bridges caused by a wooden supporting structure, anchoring or a discontinuous layer of thermal insulation. Plasterboard as such has practically no heat insulation and is fitted onto an intricate metal structure, where an error can easily cause a leak, losing heat. Other disadvantages of loft conversions using plasterboard include the amount of dust generated when fitting them, and the vapour impermeable nature of the structure as a whole, which adversely affects the indoor climate and the health of the building’s residents.

Floors made from Ekopanely boards have several advantages over conventional concrete floors. First, it can be walked on as soon as it is laid, with no further work necessary, including when Ekopanely boards are place on joists. Concrete takes a long time to set and the floor as a whole is very heavy. It is also complicated to layer a concrete floor. With just use of common tools Ekopanely boards are easy to work with and anchored using screws therefore it is quicker and easier to lay a floor using Ekopanely boards. We supply Ekopanely boards already trimmed to the required length thus minimising waste and saving you money. When laying a floor, it is important to consider the load that will be placed on it (floor deflection) . In the case of high local load (e.g. a piano, gym equipment,…), the forces must be adequately distributed.

Exterior wall construction

When building a house, Ekopanely boards are used primarily to make sandwich wall structures. They are suitable for low-energy and passive family houses and wooden buildings. A standard wall made from Ekopanely boards consists of a first outer layer of Ekopanely boards, with thermal insulation on the inside in the required thickness, a second solid layer of Ekopanely boards, an installation gap, and a third layer of Ekopanely boards. This sandwich, with at least 140 mm of insulation, meets the requirements of low-energy houses and is diffusion-open.

The Ekopanely boards building system, which is easy to anchor and connect, guarantees that external walls are easy and particularly fast to build. We supply Ekopanely boards already trimmed to the required length, thus minimising waste and saving you money. The surface area of an Ekopanely board designed for cladding purposes is around 3m² and takes just a few minutes to install.

Another advantage of this type of wall structure is the thermal insulation of Ekopanely boards, which helps to span thermal bridges in a building caused by a wooden substructure, anchoring or a discontinuous layer of thermal insulation. You can not expect this from plasterboard and gypsum boards, which have practically no heat insulation and where in fact an error can easily cause a leak, gateway heat. The heat accumulation capacity of Ekopanely boards used in exterior walls keeps the temperature stable inside the building in the summer months and saves on heating costs in the winter.

Thanks to the fibrous nature of straw, the walls of houses made from straw are permeable to water vapour. They can be used in diffusion-open structures with no problems. At higher humidity levels, Ekopanely boards absorb excess moisture into the internal pore structure of the straw fibres and, when the humidity decreases again, they slowly release it into the surrounding environment. This mechanism has a positive effect on the microclimate humidity indoors, especially in the winter, when heating reduced humidity inside the building.
